Find your bearings
A quick look at where Sonoma sits and how it is laid out.
Open in Google MapsSonoma is built around its Plaza, the mission-era square at the center of town, with the rest of the city spreading out in quiet residential blocks that reach vineyards in nearly every direction. Beyond the core, Sonoma is mostly single-story neighborhoods on quiet streets, many with mature trees and larger lots, close to the city's schools and parks. This is where most of the rental market lives.
Highway 12 connects Sonoma to Santa Rosa in one direction and, via Highway 121, to Marin and the wider Bay Area in the other. Sonoma County Transit buses serve the valley, including a route linking Sonoma with Petaluma and Sonoma State University.
The unincorporated valley communities around the city, like Boyes Hot Springs and Glen Ellen, are covered on our Sonoma County page.
